Domain Name Debacles

I am consistently SHOCKED to learn that companies allow their domain names to be registered by unathorized third-parties.  Many time this action, known as "cyber squatting," is when someone registers a trademarked term and/or name in hopes of either highjacking traffic to their own website and/or performing ppc arbitrage which is where they serve PPC ads on the wrongfully registered domain name and monetize the traffic they are getting.

As an example check out the following domains:

www.RobertRedford.com, www.2008Olympics.com, www.MedicalRecords.com, www.TrumpProductions.com, etc.

If you learn that someone has wrongfully registered a domain name that rightfully belongs to you, you can try to resolve it thru either ICANN or WIPO

Over the years I have sent a few cease & desist letters myself as well as demands for domains wrongfully registered such as LaurenHuttonCosmetics.com, which we successfully regained for the client.\

Mis-spelled domains are also valuable and worth procuring as well.....

Well, you have some points about TM domains, but then you listed:

    http://www.medicalrecords.com

This is a generic domain name, and can't be "trademarked". Why did you include this in your story? This domain is fair game, just like "insuranceplanbenefits.com" or "solarvillas.com".

You were on target until you listed that domain. I'd like to know if that was just a mistake or there is some reason behind it.

Thanks, and keep up the good work promoting domain name investments

I agree with you wholeheartedly...I was offering MedicalRecords.com as an example of someone registering a generic name and than using PPC arbitrage to monetize that domain...make sense?

Thanks for your comment, I greatly appreciate it.

    Hi Andrew,

Ahh, okay, I see your point now. It wasn't clear to me before in the way you presented the domains. Still, good article.
